Rainy Season Brings New Life to the Children’s Village Vegetable Farm

With the arrival of the rainy season, ideal farming conditions have returned to the Children’s Village vegetable farm. The soil has softened, allowing the team to begin preparing beds and cultivating the land in readiness for transplanting young seedlings — marking the start of what promises to be a productive growing season.
This season, the farm is cultivating a range of vegetables including garden eggs, chilli peppers, and okra, among others. These crops serve a dual purpose: providing the children and the wider village community with fresh, nutritious food while also giving them direct, practical experience in agriculture.

Last year’s harvest was exceptionally strong, and early preparations this season suggest similar, if not greater, results are achievable. The groundwork is being laid carefully, with the goal of maintaining both the quality and quantity of produce grown on the farm.

The farm remains an integral part of life at the Children’s Village, connecting daily nutrition with hands-on learning in a way that benefits the children both practically and personally.

Your continued support and commitment make all of this possible — and we are deeply grateful.

2026–2027 SMW Program

Preparations for the SMW 2026–2027 program began in February with both facility improvements and participant enrollment processes aimed at ensuring a successful start to the new training cycle.

Following the completion of the previous SMW program, several renovation and maintenance works were undertaken to enhance the training and residential facilities for incoming trainees and their families. These improvements included refurbishing the training center, repairing damaged flooring, and replacing worn-out windows and mosquito nets in the family houses. Together, these upgrades have created a safer, more comfortable, and more conducive environment for learning and family living.

At the same time, the participant selection process commenced with an initial group of eight candidates from the Dwabeng and Bosomtwe Districts in the Ashanti Region. After enrollment and interviews, five candidates were shortlisted based on merit and suitability, with three successfully completing the mandatory medical screening required for participation in the program.

Due to current budget constraints, this year’s training will focus on hair braiding and hairdressing, which were also the preferred vocational choices of all three participants. Training sessions are scheduled to officially begin on May 15 following the relocation of participating families to the project site. All three families, including three mothers and eleven children, have successfully relocated and are gradually integrating into the Children’s Village community.

We appreciate the continued support and commitment of staff, partners, and supporters whose contributions have made these preparations possible, and we look forward to a successful SMW 2026–2027 program.

Our School Is Growing — and We’re Building for the Future

For over a decade, our community school in Old Adwampong has been a place where children learn, connect, and discover new opportunities. As our student community grows, we hope to create additional open, well-ventilated classrooms that offer the space and calm every child needs. If you’d like to support this next step, we warmly invite you to visit our betterplace.org campaign to learn more.

Every contribution — sharing, reading, or donating — helps us move a little closer to making it real.

Strengthening Core Learning Through Creativity

At Old Adwampong Community School(OAC School), we continue to focus strongly on English and Mathematics in line with Ghana’s national curriculum. Mid-term assessments and teacher workshops have been introduced to improve classroom delivery and strengthen student outcomes.

But learning isn’t just about textbooks; it’s about discovery, creativity, and experience.! Our volunteer Amina has launched a creative pilot project where children explore everyday places — the market, kitchen, hospital, and home — through fun role-play sessions. These activities build vocabulary, improve reading and writing, and boost confidence in using English in real-life situations. The idea alone has already brought smiles and excitement! Costumes are being prepared, materials organized — and the journey has just begun. Stay tuned for our first creative learning updates soon!

Water Tanks Upgrade – Clean Water on the Way

Exciting progress! Our water storage tank renovation is moving ahead. After removing the old metal stand and concrete base, we’ve completed all six concrete pillars, now drying for four weeks before the tank platform is built. Once finished, the new system will provide reliable and clean water, boost irrigation for our vegetable farm and support a more sustainable, self-sufficient community.

Every phase — from plumbing works to installing a new ladder — is being carefully carried out to ensure long-term benefits for the children and the farm.

New Adventures in Senior High

We are proud to share that 3 of kids have successfully passed the Basic Education Exam and are now enrolled and have settled in their boarding schools!
We equipped them with everything they need — mattresses, clothes, books, and school supplies — as they begin this exciting chapter. It’s their first time living away from the Children’s Village, and we look forward to hearing about their adventures after 2.5 months.

This marks a huge milestone in their education and a big step toward their bright futures!

Update From Children’s Village

We are thrilled to share that, after just three months in the program, all of the new children and their mothers have smoothly integrated into their new environment and are flourishing in their new homes! The majority of the children have enrolled in our school, where they have already formed meaningful friendships and are excelling academically.

For the young mothers, our hands-on training programs (SMW) are providing invaluable opportunities for personal growth and development. Our trainers are deeply attuned to their individual needs, offering customized support that helps them efficiently and effectively acquire essential skills.

Additionally, we are proud to announce that our solar system has undergone a significant upgrade. It now generates enough energy to power both the village and the training center, ensuring long-term sustainability and efficiency.
